Abstract or Description

Lecture: Sensible PLUS Stage
In this talk, I will introduce my “Plus One” as “The Sensible Stage” – a pair of words that fold together interdependently yet have, at the same, distinctive affects and operations (an inseparable “plus one plus one”, perhaps). “The Sensible Stage” has travelled with me for a number of years, beginning its life as a curatorial project before becoming increasingly a device for thought; specifically, a device for thinking the possibilities for the curatorial within the immersive and often dematerialising forces of neo-liberalism, a situation in which, I will argue, the relationship between bodies and images has been irrevocably changed.
“The Sensible Stage” therefore operates as a phrase, an apparatus and as a kind of fiction (or fabulation) that prompts an exploration of the changing relationship between bodies and images in the world around us. In expanding upon this phrase (and its importance for my thinking and practice), I will draw, on the one hand, upon theories of the body and embodiment, and, on the other hand, upon writing on theatre and theatricality as a philosophical project. In this way, “The Sensible Stage” marries two opposing philosophical trajectories – one, the entangled body of new materialist or process-based philosophies, and, the other, the space-time of the stage as an architecture for governing the appearance of bodies (to very loosely paraphrase Judith Butler). It is within this couplet of expansion and separation that the curatorial intervenes to create a space and time of encounter.
