Abstract or Description

We will facilitate a large art therapy group which will explore the relationship between intelligence and feeling through a process of art-making and reflection on the experience of the conference as a whole.

The LAG is an innovative, experiential teaching method developed at Goldsmiths as a way of learning about art therapy processes. It brings together all the students and staff regularly during the academic year, allowing learning to take place through reflection on the relationships between the different components of the course as a whole. The LAG process is one of reflexivity between thinking, feeling and action, mediated through the relationship between art and words. This reflexivity allows feelings to be linked to learning about the relationship between the individual and the group, about identity and difference and the experience of art therapists in institutions and society as a whole.

The aim of the conference LAG would be to explore the collective dynamics at work in the interplay between intelligence and feeling through creating a space where:
- The individual could gain a sense of their own experiential learning in relation to feelings of alienation and belonging in the conference as a whole
- Different national and cultural conceptions of intelligence and feeling would be experienced, represented and thought about
- The dynamics between different traditions of art therapy and the similarities and differences between the different arts could be explored.

We propose three 90 minute LAG sessions, one at the end of each day, to allow the experience of the phases of group development and the processing of thinking and feeling over the time of the conference. The workshop will be open to all conference participants and will take place in a room big enough for all to attend. Art materials will be made available. However, any form of symbolic expression will be possible and any art work made can be taken away afterwards. We encourage people to come for the three sessions and stay for the whole time. After a brief introduction, people will be invited to use the space of the group as they determine. Our role will be to hold the boundaries and to facilitate the aims and objectives of the group.
The workshop will be a conference experiential event exploring the collective dimensions of the relationship between intelligence and feeling and in addition introducing the LAG as a potential teaching method for all the arts therapies.
