Abstract or Description

At the time of writing, Taksim Square, a major transitional and commercial hub of the city, popular both as a secular gathering space and a place to protest, and the adjoining Gezi Park, a sculpted parkland and one of the few freely accessible and commonly used green spaces in the center of the city, have become the focal point of protests, currently being violently suppressed by the government, thus impinging on people’s rights to the city. Here the fact of space being both occupied and forcefully evacuated, becomes a nexus for a series of political and social questions that reach far beyond Taksim and Gezi borders towards wider questions about the role of public space in the formation of political subjectivity and collectivity.
