Abstract or Description

Article on a series of polaroids by the American Photographer Walker Evans from 1974. The article argues for a reading of Evans' work as symptomatic of modernism's continued influence by Schlegel's concept of the fragment. By comparing Evans' late polaroids with his earlier interest in signage and the vernacular it sees a romantic impulse as running through his use of documentary aesthetics.
