Abstract or Description

The uncoupling of British Asian and Black British drama and performance, historically associated and elided in British theatre historiography, has been the project of a number of scholars over the past decade. Increased critical attention is at last being offered separately to these very distinct fields. Initially termed ‘Black Theatre’, both have been laced habitually to contexts of community, grassroots, and ethnic minority arts, categories that positioned all designated non-white artists (be they of Asian, African, Caribbean, or Middle Eastern descent), in the cultural periphery with concomitant critical undervaluing in relation to the hegemonic (white) sociocultural bloc. The critical and financial neglect of the sector, the result of discriminatory arts policies born of a society divided along race lines, impeded full cultural citizenship for those deemed the ethnic minority.
