Abstract or Description

Writer, art historian and professor Michael Newman eloquently explores complex issues in his writings on art. This collection reflects his ardent voice and the trajectory of contemporary art itself.

As both an art historian and critic Michael Newman has written extensively on contemporary art, focusing in particular on the image in its relation to language, the question of how art works manifest themselves and the traces and archive of an event.

A professor at the School of Institute of Chicago and Goldsmiths, London, this publication brings together a selection of Newman’s writings since 1983. Focusing on important contemporary figures such as Tacita Dean, Steve McQueen, John Stezaker and Jeff Wall, Newman’s writings have been widely published and highly regarded throughout his career.
Bruce Jenkins is Professor of Film, Video and New Media at the School of Art Institute of Chicago. Deirdre O’Dwyer is an artist and independent editor based in New York.
