Abstract or Description

Fieldwork on Mafia in summer 2010 was funded by the British Academy under its Small Grants scheme. I am grateful to the several Mafia Island hoteliers who shared information and documents, to a former Goldsmiths student for information on the Samothraki Festivals, to the many people on Mafia and Mafians in Dar es Salaam who shared their thoughts, to anthropological colleagues working on tourism and/or dance who shared their knowledge of the literature (including Margaret Kenna, Jonathan Skinner, Joy Hendry and Tom Selwyn) and, as always, to Lionel Caplan for commenting incisively on earlier drafts. I also thank the two anonymous reviewers and Katharine Fletcher, the AT copy-editor, for their helpful comments.
