Abstract or Description

The death of the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt in 1953 closed a chapter on European jazz. However, since then, Reinhardt’s distinct style has had an immeasurable influence on a growing coterie of guitar enthusiasts globally. This has been further amplified through the emergence of WEB 2.0 technologies such as YouTube. Today Gypsy jazz has become a codified form of jazz in its own right and, more recently, YouTube has been an instrumental tool in the formation of this style and the dissemination of its performance practices. By looking at Reinhardt’s posthumous legacy this discussion aims to better situate the current Gypsy jazz scene by identifying issues surrounding the genre’s origins and its existence today.

Taking an original Reinhardt composition, Djangology, as a tool to navigate this history, this paper will explore the evolution of Gypsy jazz and examine the current scene through a number of case studies dealing with tutorials and performances on YouTube. This paper ultimately aims to interrogate both the consonances and dissonances surrounding the definition and evolution of this style.
