Abstract or Description

An essay for a retrospective exhibition of the sculpture and drawings by Lucia Nogueira (1950-1998), the influential Brazilian artist who had moved to London in the 1970s. I explore the connections of her work with Arte Povera, with the body, expression and sexuality, and with sculpture as a developed, allusive and idiomatic language. The essay forms part of my ongoing enquiry into 'the long 1980s',i.e. those aspects of aesthetic thinking, especially in sculpture, that continued to flourish through the 1990s and beyond.
