Abstract or Description

This is the text from 2016 Annual Gold Lecture, which marked the 30th Anniversary of the Goldsmiths Anthropology Department.

Founded as an academic unit in 1979 by Professors Brian Morris and Pat Caplan, who were soon joined by Olivia Harris, Stephen Nugent, Victoria Goddard and Nici Nelson, the Anthropology Department was officially established in 1986 and has become synonymous with a critical approach to anthropology and a strong commitment to public engagement.

For this year’s milestone was marked by Professor Les Back from the Department of Sociology with a lecture entitled: ‘A View from Nearby’.

Professor Back was recipient of the Anthropology Department’s first PhD award. Join us as we hear his views on the future of our craft.
