Abstract or Description

As part of my research into social housing and 20th-century architecture, I have become active in practical questions of conservation. This report was submitted to Historic England as part of an application to include a 1908 three-storey cottage and remodelled entrance to a Swedenborgian church on the National Heritage List for England. It is the first built work of an Arts and Crafts-influenced architect, E.G. Trobridge, who went on, in the 20s and 30s, to build an extraordinary series of cottages, houses and flats in the suburbs of London and beyond, and also campaigned for the use of wood (green elm) as a building material in the immediate wake of World War One as a response to the housing shortage. Trobridge was a Swedenborgian, and the building is his only surviving work that is part of a religious complex. My report puts this building in the context of Trobridge's thinking as a whole and analyses for the first time many of its features, including the mosaics and his use of organic form. As a direct result of my research, which included extensive fieldwork and the location of key archival documents, the building was given statutory protection on the National Heritage List (number 1427828), and demolition was prevented. The extensive listing description online follows the direction I set out in my application. I was subsequently invited to speak on Trobridge's architecture at the Swedenborg Society's Annual Birthday Meeting in 2016.
