Abstract or Description

Why do the revolutionaries dress up in borrowed togas? What drives those who seek a new political and social settlement to turn to antiquity, the antithesis of the new? This volume of essays, which is generated by those initial questions, began as a workshop on ‘Revolutions and Classics’, held at UCL in July 2016. The two terms of the title were designed to clash and thus to provoke scrutiny. The essays assembled here are the first fruits of the mutual interrogation, and we hope they also open up space for further discussion.
