Abstract or Description

This paper takes the form of a photo essay that exposes the design process at a level of detail seldom found in traditional academic publications. With this format we document the development of a set of devices for exploring the microclimate of the home, with the intention of advancing current approaches to communicating (and understanding) practice based research.

Additional Information:

This publication was ground-breaking in the field of human computer interaction (HCI) because it was the first photo essay to be accepted as a full paper at an international conference. This publication has motivated the introduction of a new paper format for Designing Interactive Systems 2014, a leading international conference accredited by the Association of Computing Machinery. As co-author I was invited to co-chair the new track ‘Pictorials’ which will for the first time, invite visual documentation (such as a photo essay) in an HCI or design conference proceeding, offering an academic format that takes from the discipline itself rather than borrowing from others.
