MEDIA & GENDER VIOLENCE
Media and gender violence refer to the intersection of how media portrays gender and the perpetuation of violence against individuals based on their gender identity.
About AWiM23
Media and gender violence refer to the intersection of how media portrays gender and the perpetuation of violence against individuals based on their gender identity. This is not only limited to physical violence but also includes psychological, sexual and economic forms of violence. Recent statistics show that gender-based violence remains a prevalent global issue, disproportionately affecting women and girls. Similarly, women in media have long been subjected to gender-based discrimination and various forms of violence in their line of work, including sexual harassment. AWiM23 Rwanda brings together media practitioners, academia, policy actors and CSOs to share best practices and set actions to address these issues.
CONFERENCE FORMAT
To lower barriers to attendance, AWiM23 will be a hybrid conference. However, all speakers and facilitators are expected to participate in person. Given the theme, a range of formats will be deployed to facilitate audience participation and create intimate spaces for discussions, These includes Fireside chats, Open fishbowl sessions, panels, workshops and roundtable discussions.
CONFERENCE OUTCOME
The African Women in Media Declaration on Media and Gender Violence will be co-developed with conference participants. Subsequent projects will be developed based on the declaration. Day One will end with a conference review led by session
moderators. Day Two will end with the declaration roundtables, during which
the African Women in Media Declaration on Media and Gender Violence will be co-developed.
THEME OBJECTIVES
To raise awareness of the impact of media representation of gender on gender-based violence and provide a safe space where media professionals can share their lived experiences. To bring together media professionals, experts, academics, CSOs and advocates to develop strategies, guidelines and best practices for reporting on gender-based violence that promote
responsible reporting.
