Abstract or Description

When the university is thought of and run primarily as a business, there can be all sorts of problems. The recent strike action by pre-1992 universities uncovered layers of financial dissimulation, including how students can become objectified assets in league table games and in securing capital investments. What is less visible are the many warm-blooded visceral, serendipitous, often unknown elements of teaching and learning. We must stand up for the university as a public and democratic resource; a space hospitable to different outsiders, not least the strange and uncanny.
