Abstract or Description

Reflecting on the ‘Letters from Europe’ originally published in the second issue of Performance Research (in 1994), ‘Apologies for my English’ explores writing ‘from Europe’ today (in 2018), where the question of translation between languages is largely pre-empted by English as a ‘universal’ second language. Considering how English currently orients the field of performance research and also what is implied in the register of ‘apologies’ (made within, rather than for, that supposed ‘universalism’), the article explores the resonances of English as itself a topic of and for developing performance research
