Abstract or Description

Encyclopaedia entry on photo-ethnography.

Photo-ethnography—the use of still photography as a means of gathering and presenting ethnographic information and insight—has always been a feature of many anthropologists’ fieldwork, although to a greater or lesser degree. Through considering the history of photo-ethnography within the discipline, this entry tackles several central questions around the differences between photography’s use as an ethnographic methodology and publishing photography as ethnography.
