Abstract or Description

Symposium led by Dr Sunil Manghani, Reader in Critical and Cultural Theory at Winchester School of Art.

With the advent of new narratives of protest, social networks and community-engagement, the "social" and the "political" in art has been back in the spotlight. What does this mean for the painter? What is the " commitment" of/to painting, as an aesthetic and/or ethical/political practice?

Five artists, Jeffrey Dennis, Catherine Ferguson, Rebecca Fortnum, David Mabb and Emma Talbot, drew upon their own practices in exploring and interrogating the subject in response to Dr Manghani's keynote paper.
