Abstract or Description

This is the first single volume history of Serbia in any language which covers the full span of the nation’s history, from the 6th-century Slav migrations until the present-day. The book traces key developments surrounding medieval and modern polities associated with Serbs, and their relations with neighbouring peoples and empires. It is a history of Serb states, institutions, and societies which also gives voice to individual experiences in an attempt to understand how events described impacted the people who lived through them. Although no real continuity between the pre-modern and modern periods exists, several common themes and threads may be identified, including: migrations; Serbia’s relations with neighbouring empires and peoples; Serbia as a society formed in imperial borderlands and peripheries of larger territorial entities; the polycentricity of Serbia; and a surprising vitality of Serb identity, which in different incarnations through centuries has shown an ability to survive through reinvention.
