Abstract or Description

What might the idea of aesthetic education mean for us today? What lineages of critical thinking does it draw upon? What forms of knowledge and modalities of practice does it provide a frame for? What configurations of sensibility, what regimes of affectivity can it be said to cultivate? What types of setting is it capable of inventing for itself? And how might it provide a means of responding to and intervening in the series of crises - political, economic, institutional, ecological - that determine our contemporary situation?

This programme will provide a forum for these and other questions in relation to a range of discursive contexts and critical scenarios. It takes as its point of departure Spivak’s model of aesthetic education as a “training of the imagination for epistemological performance.” Multifarious in principle, for Spivak such training is necessarily tied to “an inexhaustible diversity of epistemes,” insofar as it must be both thought and practiced in view of the planet itself, the irreducible alterity of our planetary condition. Our aim in these sessions is to consider what such “epistemological performance” entails once the latter is recognised as a constituent feature of aesthetic education, with the planetary considered its fundamental frame of reference.
