Abstract or Description

The content of the Special Issue to commemorate 5 years since the death of Darcus Howe, mirrors that of the original RACE TODAY published by the Race Today Collective (1973-88). It features commentary from leading black political and cultural figures, a discussion on policing and black community resistance in the UK. Feature articles profile the international struggles and achievements of communities from the continents of Africa, Australia, Europe and the regions of South- East Asia and the Carribean. Probing interviews with members of UK BLM, artist Sonia Boyce, MP Diane Abbott, and black women in theatre, women's hip-hop explore British contexts, alongside commentary on political blackness by Rahila Gupta and Kehinde Andrews. Original poetry by Fred D'Aguiar, Linton Kwesi Johnson, Grace Nichols, features with photography by Horace Ove, Neil Kenlock, Vanley Burke and a wide range of perspectives in exhibition and book reviews and a section 'in memoriam'.
