Abstract or Description:

Versioning as Method is a project led by Dr. Louis Moreno in collaboration with Visual Cultures Research Fellow Dr. Edward George.

Versioning as Method explores how different forms of music provide a complex medium to research the social forms, historical forces and cultural modalities which underpin the spatial and affective infrastructures of racial capitalism.

The three strands of the project comprise different historical conjunctures of capitalism where the spatial intersection of music, race and sexuality can be explored and investigated.

1. On Broadwater Farm : Dub Housing and the sonic architecture of urban space in London during Covid.

2. Monopolated Light and Power : luminescence, financial capital and music video in 1990s and 2000s New York.

3. Debussy’s cakewalk : tonal impressions of race, racism, colonialism and revolution in late 19th and early 20th century French poetics.

Each of these maps onto different research clusters in the department and in addition to providing overall material for the environmental statement in the ref, will provide evidence supporing REF portfolio outputs. These outputs will be the product of the collaboration between Dr. George and Dr. Moreno.
