Abstract or Description

The article considers how environmental feelings of difficulty, pain and disorientation – intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic – are essential to all life's dynamic transformation and survival within changing conditions. The article compares a recent 'posthumanist' art project by Pierre Huyghe to the 'aesthetic life' of activists living on the Zone à Defendre (ZAD) in western France to see how far art is capable of real environmental responsiveness essential to survival in climate crisis.
