Abstract or Description

Panel discussion presented as part of SAMA ICOM-SA COMCOL Online SEMINAR: Decolonizing as a verb: Reinterpreting collections and collecting that took place on Wednesday 25 November – Thursday 26 November 2020. An international convening that explored the challenges of museums and cultural institutions to "decolonize" their collections and practices, while the legacies of coloniality remain deeply ingrained in the fabric of our societies. This seminar series challenged the conventional wisdom of most museums and cultural institutions, whose decolonising practices mainly consist of increasing representation of black and people of colour, with emphasis on former colonies or the repatriation of objects that is often tied to a certain amount of policy and protocol, which is seeped in the legacies of colonial power.

Session 3 explored how artists "use the archives from colonialism and imperialism to uncover narratives by unlearning, undoing existing patterns and repertoire." (SAMA ICOM-SA COMCOL)

This session was moderated by Ghanaian artist and educator at the Faculty of Art – Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology – Ghana, Bernard Akoi- Jackson with Barby Asante, Artist, Curator and Educator - United Kingdo, Clementine Deliss - African Artists’ Foundation (AAF) - Nigeria and Patricia Kaersenhout Visual Artist – the Netherlands.
