Developed from an industry live brief developed by Quin and Studioilse, and taught by Richardson and Awosile, Community and Connection was a site-specific design project at Reffetorio Felix St Cuthbert's Centre - a charity that serves meals made from surplus food to the local community. It sought to build on the existing facilities and environment, designed by Studioilse, by identifying design opportunities that would enhance community and connection. Students developed these ideas into proposals over the course of the project.

The project won £2500 KTP Catalyst Funding from Innovate UK, and Quin and Richardson led a team of students (Penelope Amati and Matteo Iacono Kissun) to develop a proposal for a community cinema, over summer 2023. This was helped by a bursary and mentoring sessions from community cinema charity Cinema for All. Designs developed for the event included chair cushion prototypes, a set of bespoke black-out blinds with graphic perforations, ticketing, popcorn cones, posters and lightbox signage.

The Cinema had its first screening on 28th September 2023, showing the Jackie Chan action comedy Police Story (1985). The project was presented as a KTP project share to Innovate UK at Goldsmiths, September 2023.

A forthcoming publication will explore the outcomes of the event and the original project, and will be shared on the Food for Soul Learning Network.
