Abstract or Description

"A Score for Verbs" is an artist talk that thinks about reading, archives, and the many ways we can publish and collect a text and performance. Perhaps the performance (or publication) in question is a textile, embroidered or screenprinted, or it’s a graphic score; perhaps it exists across multiple objects and materials, in multiple versions, not singularly contained. The talk also acts as a sort of performance score, drawing out possible directions, movements, and actions. What can we do with language? And what does it do to us? How do we follow its contours, how do we twist and twirl in return? Performance, which suggests and invites a kind of doing, imagined or otherwise, tests the boundaries of verbal world-making. Scores are all about process, the body, the marks we leave behind. How do we engage creatively with these processes and archives, beyond reading for ‘historical evidence’ or biography, giving ourselves fictional or speculative permissions? Performance creates its own resonant archive: it can archive intimacy, it may revel in confusion, against the order of the catalogue; never quite ‘ours’; it asks us to handle it with care.
