Abstract or Description

‘Nowhere/Now/Here’ was a book and exhibition which offered an opportunity to reflect on how design and technology can change lives, systems and the environment. It featured more than 60 works be internationally recognized designers ranging from everyday products, fashion, and jewellery to installations and live performances by figures such as Tord Boontje and Dunne & Raby, together with the work of four design masters: Ron Arad, Gaetano Pesce, Javier Mariscal and Daniel Weil.

‘How to Miss the Point’ sought to make a semiotic contribution to this debate by examining the ontological assumptions that often operate silently behind graphical and object-based forms of denotation. Specifically, the piece drew on the work of Wittgenstein and Foucault so as to illustrate the often-paradoxical nature of communication by meaning of pointing.
