Compared to other developmental disorders, DCD remains poorly understood by many healthcare and educational professionals. Although the condition is included in ICD-10 and DSM-IV-TR, (the formal classification systems used for diagnosis), evidence-based practical guidelines for the assessment and management of DCD have been lacking.
A set of guidelines for German speaking countries recommended by the European Academy of Childhood Disability (EACD) are available on the EACD website (http://www.eacd.org/publications.php) and have been published in the journal Developmental Medicine & Child Neurology. The recommendations were reached following a meticulous review of the literature and consensus from international experts, including individuals in Movement Matters. The guidelines identify best practice for assessment, diagnosis and intervention and are in the process of being adopted by the German equivalent of NICE.
While the production of these guidelines is a useful and important step forward in the field, Movement Matters after two consensus meetings has adapted these to ensure they are appropriate for the medical and educational setting in the UK. This process is also being undertaken in other European countries.
The workshops for this process took place at Scope, 6 Market Road, London, N7 9PW on 28th October 2011 and 19th January 2012 and involved focused discussion among a group of approximately 30 clinicians, educators and researchers from a range of health care and education professions from across the UK.
