Abstract or Description
The transformation of cultural provision from a largely cheap or free, basically funded and low-key activity to one that is corporately funded within a fluid network of public and private patronage initiatives, that has a high media
profile but is out of bounds both culturally and financially to most people is one of the achievements of processes of neo-liberalism as its mechanisms have continued to be adopted and perfected by governments over the past thirty
years. Key to this transformation are a number of procedures that have been embraced by the arts: the adoption of the market economy as the basis for cultural transaction, the instantiation of competition and meritocracy as the methods which delineate what gets shown and where it gets shown, and the naturalization of private patronage and its taste-shaping capacity.
