Abstract or Description

Sanja Iveković: Unknown Heroine – a Reader brought together edited versions of papers presented at a conference, ‘23%,’ organized in tandem with Ivekovic’s first UK retrospective ‘Unknown Heroine,’ at Calvert 22 and the South London Gallery in late 2012 and early 2013. Contributors were: Ivana Bago, Katy Deepwell, Lina Džuverović, Silvia Eiblmayr, Elisabeth Lebovici, Suzana Milevska and Milica Tomić. The book was designed by Rafaela Dražić.

Following the themes of the conference, which itself had been organized by the curator of Iveković’s exhibition, Lina Džuverović, contributions considered themes of historical amnesia, invisible heroines and unheard voices; art as a transformative encounter; and agency, activism, feminist strategies, and looking to the future.

‘23%’, the conference title, was drawn from a research report compiled by the Fawcett Society revealing that women in the UK earn 15% less than men. In London, in January 2013, the pay gap stood at 23%.

In her introduction, editor Helena Reckitt underscored the importance of being named and hailed in Iveković’s work, and considered the complications of a monographic approach to her work. She highlighted how Iveković’s attitude to her art as being ‘time’ as well as ‘site specific’ makes it particularly relevant to considerations of the recent past and speculations on possible futures. Underscoring the importance of tropes of visibility and invisibility in Iveković’s work and in the critical responses of the various contributors, Reckitt noted contributor Katy Deepwell’s attention to how viewers are encouraged both to identify and dis-identify with the tropes of femininity that Iveković explores and depicts. Reckitt concluded by pointing to the less-than visible aspect of Iveković’s work reflected in her political alliances with other feminists and activists.

The book included extensive colour reproductions of Ivekovic’s work and the ‘Unknown Heroine’ exhibition as well as other installations.
