Abstract or Description

There is growing international consensus that the quality of urban governance is the single most important factor in eradicating poverty. This paper addresses the applicability of good governance to the realities of African cities. It brings forward a set of generic considerations applicable to the realities of urban governance in Africa, acknowledging that cities embody highly diverse histories and connections with the larger world, and advocating for greater knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural underpinnings of those practices that continue to undermine transparent and accountable urban management in Africa
