Des Freedman turns the public spotlight on media owners themselves. In this piece he makes the case that media moguls both service elites and constitute an important part of elite networks too. In the former, media elite interests coincide with general elite interests and so mainstream media promote individual wealth over collective welfare. In the latter, media-facilitated networks physically link disparate elite sectors and also circulate dominant elite norms on a communicative and cultural level.
