Abstract or Description

The article explores the appropriation of the manifesto form by artists and writers whose work is informed by feminist politics. It discusses contemporary figures such as artists Allison Smith, LTTR, Ridyeulous, Kerry Tribe and Christine Hill and the writer Avital Ronell alongside those associated with second wave feminism including artists Valie Export and Mierle Laderman Ukeles and writers Valerie Solanas, Audre Lorde, Ti Grace Atkinson and Julia Kristeva. By showing how contemporary figures revisit and revise earlier manifestos and polemics, the essay presents links between different generations. At the same time it underlines different generational approaches to the manifesto form, contrasting the earnest fervour of second wave feminists with more ambivalent contemporary stances that channel the manifesto’s power while questioning its revolutionary certainty.
