This chapter examines mathematics and related cognitive and neurobiological characteristics from the perspectives of quantitativeand molecular genetics. After describing quantitativegenetic methods, weexamine the genetic and environmental etiology of mathematics performance and mathematical cognition. Next, we examine the genetic and environmental etiology of the developmentof mathematics achievementas well as relationships among mathematics, mathematical cognition and other academic features, in particular reading, motivation, and emotional characteristics. We conclude with a discussion of molecular genetics and neurobiological studies of mathematics within genetically informative designs.
