Networked Cultures is a research project funded by the 6th EU Framework Programme to investigate collaborative agency in artistic and cultural production. Between 2005 and 2009 the research produces an array of materials ranging from a book publication (320 pages, March 2008, NAi Publishers, Rotterdam), an interactive website (www.networkedcultures.org), an open source database and a feature-length documentary (109 min, 2007) to a series of exhibitions, workshops and conferences (2007-2009). The theoretical work is grounded in transdisciplinary literature on networked art production and extensive field studies in Europe and the Americas. Investigations in cities such as Moscow, Rio de Janeiro, Detroit, Belgrade or Istanbul have been used to collect data and material and to conduct 50 video-interviews with key theorists, curators and practitioners. This filmic archive has been turned into the submitted feature-length documentary (Networked Cultures, 2007). In 2005 we launched an online communication platform to report interim results of the research, to announce public events and to engage in dialogue with other theorists and practitioners. The website contains an open source database with a growing number of projects from around the world that exemplify issues discussed in the theoretical work. In addition, a number of texts have been commissioned to further reflect on one of the research strands identified in the early stages of the project (‘network creativity', ‘contested spaces', ‘trading places', ‘parallel worlds'). Some of these texts are available online, other texts (by Marina Grzinic, Adrian Blackwell, AbdouMaliq Simone, Brian Massumi and Irit Rogoff) will be published in the book. All elements will be used in a series of screenings, exhibitions, workshops and conferences in 15 different cities in Europe and the Americas.
