Abstract or Description

In this article, I discuss some notable resemblances between the early Gramsci’s writings on the ‘factory councils’ and the motif of ‘intersecting planes’ developed primarily by the futurist painter and sculptor, Umberto Boccioni. While Gramsci eventually came to be rather critical of the futurists as individuals, this early overlap suggests that he, too, drew inspiration from some of the ideas they put into circulation. By the time he came to formulate his theory of hegemony, however, he had substantially revised his conception of the spatiality of political intervention.
