No full text availableAbstract or Description
This public lecture will be delivered by Professor Anna Furse and is part of the Neurohumanities Seminar Series, funded by the Wellcome Trust.
The talk will introduce Anna Furse's theatre and writing praxis in which she has explored aspects of how medicine and art have overlapped across time, and how culture informs a way of seeing the body in clinical and dissection contexts.
Furse is interested in the transgressive act of opening the body and looking under the skin; where imagination meets flesh; and the tension between fascination and disavowal of corporeal interiority. Her productions, made for theatres as well as hospitals, have examined representations of pathology and anatomy in medical protocols. She takes in drawing and painting, sculpture, photography and imaging technologies, and observes how the woman's body - specifically - 'presents' (performs) under the scrutiny of the medical gaze, that, since the brush, and amplified by the lens and digital technologies, has become prosthetic.
About the Neurohumanities lecture series
Neurohumanities is managed by a cross-disciplinary seminar organizing committee. These seminars are designed to bring STEM and humanities researches to reflect, discuss and think together, as well as to provide a platform for public engagement. It further funds workshops and discussion meetings that connect STEM and Humanities.
It also provides seed grants for the development of new interdisciplinary research, particularly in the arts and humanities that connect to neuroscience and brain health.
