On a Caribbean island where both tradition and the very modern shape everyday lives, Carole and Monica’s best friend Ruthie has been murdered. The gossips emerge to heap blame. Did the screech owls in any way signify Ruthie’s murder? The friends, trying to come to terms with their own feelings, avoid each other. Unknown to each other, instead of going to the wake, they head for the same concert. When Carole discovers Monica at the concert, feelings run high and their questions raise the tension between them until an older woman persuades them to return to the wake and the more traditional way of remembering their friend.
