Abstract or Description

This cycling costume comes from the Bikes and Bloomers research. It is inspired by Mary Ward’s 1897 patent #9605. A long A-line skirt is made up of two ‘aprons’ joined at the waist and sides via buttons and button-holes. The convertible system comprises two decorative straps sewn into the waistband that remain hidden until required. To convert the garment, the wearer uses the straps to tether the skirt at intervals via the side buttons, gathering it up out of the way of the wheels in a ruche manner.
