Abstract or Description
This three-day workshop introduced phenomenologically-based research and pedagogical methods and, in particular, a recently developed qualitative research methodology known as Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).
IPA is usually used by researchers in the social sciences who are carrying out primary, interview-based field work with small data sets. This workshop introduced IPA and also explored how it can be most effectively applied and adapted to benefit researchers working and teaching in the emerging fields of contemporary Asian Art Histories and Visual Culture.
IPA is particularly valuable with respect to assembling primary source materials within emerging fields because it is designed to enable:
nuanced modes of interviewing key agents (artists, curators, audiences) and of self-interviewing
the capacity to work with gathered data in great detail, using a range of analytical
