Abstract or Description

This essay explores the gains and pains of showing film in the gallery context. Case studies include work by Saskia Olde Wolbers, Richard Greyson and Renzo Martens. The book Truth, Dare or Promise: Art and Documentary Revisited reflects on the ways that artists and filmmakers address the innovations and limitations of producing and exhibiting their work. Ranging from community collaboration to individual interpretation, and from gallery installation to cinematic screening, the book explores the differences and overlaps between definitions and methodologies. With an international reach, contributors are both practitioners and theorists, including Hito Steyerl, Andrea Luka Zimmerman, Miranda Pennell, Babette Mangolte among others.
