Abstract or Description

A characteristic of most urban areas is there ethnic and racial diversity. In this chapter we examine how race, and in particular racism, operates in and through contemporary education policy and practice. Building on an analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research, we show how race inequity has been influenced by the drive to improve ‘standards’ as defined in official policy. The principal sections of the chapter consider differences in attainment between minority ethnic groups; the issue of exclusion (expulsion) from school; and the in-school processes that shape minority students’ experience and achievements. IN order to contextualise these debates, however, it is useful to begin with a brief introduction to the demographic landscape.
