Abstract or Description: | "Calypso Fugitive is the second Mixpak release from London-via St. Louis producer Mr One Hundred. Building on the work of his first record for Mixpak, Palm Tree Destruction, Mr One Hundred continues to play with the boundaries of soca music, exploring frenetic rhythms and spirited, uplifting crescendos. A product of his storied history in dance music, Calypso Fugitive finds Mr One Hundred exploring the fruitful regions between soca and Detroit techno à la Juan Atkins and Omar S. With soca as a container for his musical ideas and influences, Mr One Hundred is making Caribbean-inspired music that pushes against neatly defined genres, employing an overtly dubbed out palette and halftime rhythmic elements to great effect. Steel pans, whistles and cowbells pepper the slow builds that drop into percussion-drenched breakneck euphoria." This is a 4 track album I wrote and produced, the second under my Mr One Hundred moniker for Mixpak Records out of New York, USA. The music is in a style I invented that I call "Hi Tech Soca" - a fusion of soca rhythmic and melodic elements with a sonic palette drawn from Detroit techno and Western/academic electro-acoustic art-music. This music has been broadcast internationally including on BBC Radio 1, and I have also have performed it internationally as well, most recently at music venues in Chicago, USA and Berlin, DE. One track on the album was also a collaboration with the artist Wayne Phoenix. |
