Abstract or Description

This chapter is an introduction to a Global Englishes (GE) approach to materials development for language teaching, which aims to challenge the current ‘global’ approach to ELT materials as not including the diversity of English and relying on Anglocentric ideologies. The chapter explores how GE can provide both the research base and the approach for designing, evaluating, and adapting materials. It reviews the challenges for teachers and materials development and provides some recommendations for practice. It finally argues that today the ELT profession is in need not of global coursebooks, but Global Englishes coursebooks.
