Abstract or Description

I am interested in exploring the question of the 'religious' from the perspective of contemporary art practice. This is on the basis that the more usual terms of 'spirituality' in art are reliant on Romantic and Modernist notions that may not best serve the contemporary situation. Obviously, ‘religion’ is itself a highly problematic notion in contemporary cultural terms, but in this lies the research interest. The outcomes of my research to date have been within the bounds of video installation, but will in future be conditioned by my forthcoming ordination in the Church of England, where I will serve as a self-supporting minister, whilst continuing to work as an artist and teacher. Although I am clear that these roles will be distinct, their relation will constitute the context of my future research into this question.
