Abstract or Description

This interactive digital map layer, hosted by the 'Layers of London' website, locates the onward destinations of all 1027 passengers who arrived on the MV Empire Windrush on June 22, 1948. The interactive map layer shows the name, occupation, date of birth, and the address to which each of the passengers was travelling. It also includes an image of their reimagined landing card. Users of the map layer are able to 'pin' their own information, memories, and documents to the map, which will ultimately create an additional crowdsourced database. The interactive map layer provides fascinating insights into the onward journeys and everyday lives of those who arrived on the Empire Windrush. It provides a valuable teaching resource for schools, and a talking point for projects on migration and identity, as well as being interesting and useful for those researching family and social history.
