Abstract or Description

This refereed paper (5,000 words) describes the contextual loci that mark out the research domain of the 'Mediatised View' research project (one of five research projects in the larger multi-disciplinary Spaces of Media Research project, 'Spaces, Connections, Control' at Goldsmiths). The paper presents the socio-cultural and technological problematic of, and the historical background to, the designing of new mixed reality viewing (and aural) devices for the London Eye which is the focus of the 'Mediatised View' Project. The paper also explores notions of presence and in so doing begins to rough out the possible user experiences of the design. Further, it also speculates on new kinds of networked products within the cityscape that may feed into a mediatised view - drawing on earlier research.
