Abstract or Description

Experiments in Cultures of Equality grows out of the six GlobalGRACE (Global Gender and Cultures of Equality) research projects (2017-2022) in Bangladesh, Brazil, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa and the United Kingdom. We worked with creative and arts-based methods to support, strengthen and reimagine what decolonising gender inequalities might look, sound and feel like. Together with local partners, we used our creative and critical resources to help expand and deepen existing creative activism in each of the regions. Recognising the regional history and meanings of decolonising struggles, we have tried to maintain regional inflections. So, each regional contribution in the course is different in style, while core orientations and structures are shared. The projects have drawn from the wisdom of collaborators and their struggles to overturn legacies of colonialism and how colonialism has shaped race and gender inequalities in the past and present. The course and projects were not trying to fill ‘gaps’ in Northern literatures and scholarship. Rather, we have sought to honour, recognise and lift-up different ways of knowing, being, surviving and creating.
