Abstract or Description

This talk and conversation with curator Julie Pellegrin considered a series of questions about the practice and ethics of care within the contemporary art context and in relation to curatorial labour.

How can we talk in a non-judgmental environment amongst peers felt like a constructive step towards unlearning unsustainable work habits? How can we imagine ourselves operating as part of a caring alliance? How can we push back against exploitative working conditions? How can we develop propositions for new habits and structures in which care would be more equitably valued, remunerated, and distributed? How can we care with others? How can we develop more reciprocal forms of care, based in the redistribution of resources, between curators and the artists, institutions, communities and publics?

Additional Information:

This was the third online meeting of four organised by DCA, the French national network for contemporary art centres. It was developed together with French and European partners as a four-part series of online meetings, where art workers, artists, curators, institutional directors, thinkers and researchers shared inspirations, ideas and actions with the goal of advancing gender equality and diversity in contemporary art centres and cultural institutions at large.

This third meeting focused on the preparation and development of a common Europe-wide strategy with the presentation of tools, methodologies, transformative actions, and true equality measures.

Other speakers were Nanne Buurman, lecturer, curator, author and editor, Iris Dressler, co-director of Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart and associate lecturer at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Stuttgart, and Julie Pellegrin, curator and researcher, then resident at the Académie de France in Rome – Villa Médicis, with whom Helena Reckitt was in conversation in relation to her talk and a workshop she and Pellegrin had run in Paris in 2019 called 'Taking (Back) Care.'

Discussions were led and moderated by Céline Kopp, Director of Le Magasin, Centre National d'Art Contemporain in Grenoble, with the participation of Manuel Segade, Director of CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo in Madrid.
