Abstract or Description

Helena Reckitt introduced her proposition of ‘Productive Refusals’, which draws from her work on care and and cultural labour. Her workshop looked at what it might mean to say ‘no’ as a productive way to change existing habits and systems, as well as foregrounding ethical questions around issues such as pay, labour and exploitation in the art world.

Item Type:

Conference or Workshop Item (Other)

Additional Information:

The workshop took place as part of the first annual Freelands Artist Programme Symposium, hosted by Site Gallery in Sheffield. It brought together participating organisations: g39, Cardiff; PS², Belfast; Site Gallery, Sheffield; Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh, as well as Freelands Foundation. The purpose of the symposium was collectively to explore themes of care, community, refusal and radical hospitality through workshops and talks. Departing from radical institutional models and socially engaged artistic practices, the symposium was structured around a series of questions and formulations that asked: what can the Freelands Artist Programme be? Other sessions were led by artist Grace Ndiritu, and by George Clark and Kunsthalle Lissabon.
